From wiki:

"Chris Daughtry wrote the song on the couch the day before he left for American Idol. The theme of the song centers around the singer being grateful for what he has, but still longing for his family. Therefore, he realizes it is best if he comes home, where he is surrounded by love. He states during the chorus:

“ I don't regret this life I chose for me.
But these places and these faces are getting old
So I'm going home ”

Film composer Deborah Lurie provided the string arrangements used in the song."

"On January 8, 2008, it won the People's Choice Award for "Favorite Rock Song""

From vh1:

"Other contenders to be first out the gate include "It's Not Over" and the ballad "Home." "I actually wrote 'Home' at home," said Daughtry, who started singing and playing guitar in high school. "I was sitting on my couch and I knew I was getting ready to go out and do the show. I guess I started picturing what it was going to be like if things go really well. I think I wrote the song in, like, 10 minutes and I never changed anything from that time. I was really proud of it. It was just one of those songs that you're feeling it, and it came right out and you never really had to think about it." ~Chris Daughtry

Not bad for ten minutes.

That's kinda weird.  I know I've used some odd things like napkins and coasters, matchbooks with eyeliner when the inspiration hits, but I've never ever written on a couch.

I thot what was fascinating about it (and a huge hit song out here), but that he was home when he wrote it, and it was almost like him projecting forward, seeing his life flash before him, but still knowing home was it. Maybe, to keep himself grounded in some way. Its pretty cool - home inspired him for the hit - knowing whats important, in advance.
