After seeing a massive oil spill pollute San Francisco Bay in 1971, John Francis gave up all motorized transportation. For 22 years, he walked everywhere he went -- including treks across the entire United States and much of South America -- hoping to inspire others to drop out of the petroleum economy. Soon after he stopped riding in cars, Francis, the son of working-class, African-American parents in Philadelphia, also stopped speaking. For 17 years, he communicated only through improvised sign language, notes, and his ever-present banjo. Listen to the environmental pilgrim, John Francis, retell the story in his own words!

What would life be like in silence?

Still thinking on this....

I'm usually a pretty quiet person.  I don't talk a lot.  Especially if I'm in a situation where I'm not keen on a subject or I don't know the people well.   Often I'll just sit quietly unless I really have something I need to say or the subject is of great interest to me.

I've run into people who really do not like this. It makes them uncomfortable and sometimes it's like it ****es them off that I don't talk.  I've gotten comments like "You're too quiet."  "Do you ever talk?" and "What, you think you're too good for us, you won't talk to us?"

Silly stuff like that.  But it brings to mind how much people really rely on talking, and expect it and even feel like they need it.  I know folks (I'm sure we all do  ) who don't stop talking.  Every moment of silence is filled with the sound of their voice.   Riding in the car, walking down the street, even showering or watching a movie or reading a book, the talking doesn't stop.

So thinking about taking a vow of silence, while it would be difficult, quite impossible for me at work, though not-so-hard at home, would really be beneficial, for the non-talker and also (maybe more so) for the listeners.

It might really force people to be quiet and listen.

Wow! That is amazing he could do that. Still found an alternative way of communicating though - in a more spiritual way perhaps. Very fascinating.

I'm thinking of doing a day of silence this weekend.

Nah, they'll be good.  I'll explain everything to them and let them see the video.   They'll be cooperative I am sure.  They've been really good lately with letting me have time to focus on my Path.
 Cool

Perhaps, they'll try it, too.

Well, had a very quiet Sunday at my house.   Now that it's all over I find myself wanting to do this more.  I'll write more on this after.

I had a day of silence yesterday.  It went very well.   I very uch enjoyed not talking all day and the way that my kids sort of followed me most times, without really meaning to.   In fact, now that it is all over, I am finding myself wanting to do this again.

A few things I noticed, though there were many.   Coming to forums to allow myself to read but not reply, I had many moments where I really had something I thought I 'needed' to say.  Responses mostly to other posts, but as moments wore on I found that my replies weren't actually necessary and I just sighed, shrugged my shoulders and let it go.

Also non-verbal communication is a very big part of life.   Even without talking (or writing notes as I did on occasion) it was fairly easy to convey simple messages to those I am close to.  Strangers would be harder though I didn't enccounter that.

Cass was a little upset for a while that I wouldn't talk to her and I had one small bit of frustration in helping Jake with his homework, but all in all, was a great adventure, well worth the effort.

It took me a little while to get used to all the talking today at work.   After such a quiet Sunday, I wasn't quite in the mood for a lot of chit-chat.

I think I might do well in a cave or a cabin in the woods for a while

Thanks.  Yeah, I learned a lot, but I also enjoyed it very much.
