The modern western world has contributed a very distorted view of the word "karma", and tends to present it like some kind of santa-claus list (of good and bad). This is not accurate.

Karma literally means "action". Its the process of natural reality, unfolding in each moment. If the universe were a giant clock, then the movement of all the gears and parts which cause it to run would be "karma". It is a mechanical process, like all natural processes. It can also be thought of like a spider web, where if you touch just one strand far off in the corner, the entire thing will vibrate with your touch. This is the all-encompassing quality of karma. The conceptual and moral ideas of right and wrong have absolutely nothing to do with actual karma. Its simply a physical force, like gravity.  It is both the action and the consequence of that action, endlessly looping in the realm of impermanence, the realm of change and motion.

Karma is also the vehicle for occult power, and is the means by which a sorcerer's 'will' acts on the world. It is the energy by which events are set into motion - and in the case of occult practices (the second attention, or "magic" and "sorcery" and so forth), the chain of karmic causation has a great deal of mass due to its circuitous routes. The correlation between cause and effect is quite distant, and therefore the action appears as "magic" because the chain of connected causal events is so long as to be unfathomable to the ordinary person.

And yet this heavy use of karmic energy has an equally heavy price that comes with it. For those who do not keep a constant vigil, moment by moment, for those who seek power for its own sake rather than seeking it only as a means to real freedom - it is a foregone conclusion that such a person will end up in much, much worse existential subjugation than before they began such endeavors.  Don Juan said he was teaching Castaneda sorcery because it was the only way he knew how to move the assemblage point and gain the ability to slip 'between the worlds'.  He continuously warned that the sorcerers world was a much worse place to be than the ordinary world, because of its dazzling enchantments and more comprehensive reality.  If a person is seeking the second attention purely for its own sake, if they move the assemblage point to the sorcerers world and then do nothing but indulge in that world - then all they are really doing is creating larger and more dense chains of slavery around themselves.  They are truly in a worse position than the ordinary person when it comes to having a chance at real freedom.

Fortunately, most people who consider themselves sorcerers do not actually have access to this kind of power - they only imagine themselves to possess it, and therefore the backlash is much less severe.  There are a great many people for whom these activities and traditions are more like a hair-style than a life-style.  They collect ideas and teachings like different outfits which they can parade around in.  Its quite ordinary, just with "non-ordinary" concepts.  Although actual sorcerers with genuine non-ordinary abilities can also use them merely as a way to inflate their personality and self-importance, by means of an energetic manipulation of society (the people around them).  In the end, both the poser and the actual sorcerer are acting towards the same goal - although the sorcerer will have a much more massive bill to pay off in the long run.  Even a sorcerer using their 'will' only as a way to fulfill personal indulgences of an anti-social nature will have this same resultant inflation of self-importance into the stratosphere.  This ultimately petty nature is the common end when one is defeated by the "third enemy on the path of knowledge", which is: power.

This aspect of power is not the action of the 'totality' (or third attention).  When the 'totality' acts, it is beyond karmic repercussions because it is an instrument of karma itself.  It is not existing under the law, because it IS the law.  When it comes to the 'totality' there is no longer a separation between self and reality, and therefore there is no space for a personal karmic continuum to exist.  Rather, there is only the 'totality' itself, which is a manifestation of the impersonal and universal law.  The 'totality' is a manifestation of ultimate universal justice, beyond any kind of human morality or personal ideas of "right" and "wrong" or "good" and "bad" or "angel" and "demon".  This has been called the way of the seer, or the man of knowledge.
